A month ago, I saw A Prairie Home Companion on a flight to California. I was laughing out loud through most of the movie. I was the only person on a full flight laughing out loud. I was very aware that I was the only person laughing. It’s not a prat-fall movie that hits you in the gut— it’s a brain tickler— and as such, it requires that one pays attention to the language.
The Tuesday after I came back from California, it was released on DVD; I bought it. Mary and I watched it and she thought it as funny as I did. We spent a couple of weeks ending our conversations with, “... and all for a 59¢ donut.”
Robert Altman was one of my favorite directors, and when he died last week, I realized what he intended with the movie, and thought how wonderful to be able to co-write your own eulogy with Garrison Keillor.
