In Spring ‘05, we put a semi-formal landscaping feature in the middle of the backyard. It features a copper chiminea, some park benches, and shrubbery that will grow into a circular hedge. The circle is twenty four feet in diameter, and is a wonderful place for a cool evening fire, enjoying a glass of wine.
Over the winter, rabbits ate most of it. The plants survived, and most of it grew back, but we want to keep it from being eaten this year so that it can achieve hedge status. Last weekend, they started nibbling at the plants behind the park benches despite the rabbit fencing we put up.
Last night, Mary went to buy some chicken wire, but returned with rabbit repellent. We went out to spray it, and the first thing I noticed in the fading light was all of the rabbit fur in the circle. Then I saw a bit of entrail and a coyote’s calling card.
We were positively gleeful and hope that nature continues to take care of our problem.
