Here’s a great article on why Chicago should be the US’s selection for the 2016 Summer Games. I hope the worldwide political situation doesn’t affect our chances if we’re selected to represent the US by the USOC— I think we could put on one of the greatest Olympics ever.
Crown Fountain has two 50 foot tall monoliths at each end of a shallow pool. The inner faces have video screen that randomly display faces of 1000 different Chicagoans. Strangely, you can see the inner structure of the nearer tower in this photograph; in person, this is not visible and the monoliths appear solid.
The faces mostly appear motionless, but will occassionally blink and smile for several seconds. They also have an otherworldly metallic sheen and seem to almost sparkle. As I took several photos, I realised that this effect would be impossible to photograph.
After about thirteen minutes, the lips pucker and a stream of water shoots from the mouth. Kids scream and jostle for position to ensure maximum soakage. After the spitting face, the monoliths will display images of moving rainclouds or running streams as hundreds of gallons of water pour over their tops. Again, kids scream and jostle for position to ensure maximum soakage.
