The panels on the front of the bar still need to be done and the whole thing (including ceiling) sanded, filled, stained and finished. The panels are 1/4 inch birch veneer plywood with solid rails. For the ceiling, the panels were glued and nailed, then the rails screwed into the framing above, making the ceiling very secure.
Mary is painting the phone booth red. I used MDF to trim out the booth. I’d never use the stuff to make furniture, but as painted trim, it’s hard to beat— it mills easily, doesn't warp and takes paint extremely well. It took almost an entire 4x8 sheet to make this trim.
Why a phone booth? Well, a pub needs a phone booth. I wanted to have a phone in the room but didn't want just a desk phone on the bar. It can get noisy in a bar— even if it wasn’t a large group of people, it could be a movie making the noise. The booth offers significant noise reduction so that a phone conversation doesn’t bother others in the room, nor does room noise bother the person on the phone.
I briefly looked into buying an authentic British phone booth, but I found out that they’re cast iron, weigh about a ton and run about five grand, not including shipping. I don’t think Mary and I would be able to carry one down to the basement.
The phone booth is painted. Unfortunately, it’s too dark, so Mary will be painting it again. She’s having a sign company do the “Telephone” sign over the door.
Here’s my structured wire box in the adjacent mechanical room. It’d be less full if it wasn’t for the eight-port gigabit switch. The switch itself has a pretty noisy cooling fan, so I’m glad I have it here instead of putting it in one of our offices.
The one red patch cable that’s not secured is for the port in the bar. I didn’t feel like cutting the zip-tie holding the other patch cables just to secure one more when the box is just going to be covered anyway. But then again, it bugs me every time I see this picture, so maybe I’ll secure it just so I can take a clean photo.
