This is looking from the corner of the room by the screen wall, looking back toward the bar. The detail in the carpeting is lost in the photograph. It’s mostly blue with some golden swirls.
We were going to get some very nice custom metal and wood bar stools, but ended up getting padded bucket stools at a quarter the price. The padded buckets are extremely comfortable, too.
The ceiling and bar are not really curved; that’s barrel distortion from the lens on my wife’s digital camera.
This is the bar back. I was thinking of making doors for it, but I think I like it better open. And doors would probably be too wide to comfortably open them if there were more than one person behind the bar at a time. I built the canvases and frames for the paintings that Mary is promising me; right now, they’re just painted a dark red.
I did the under counter in slate, and the backsplash with black subway tile. I only had to cut four slate tiles in half, so instead of renting a wet saw, I bought a special dry-cut blade for my circular saw, which saved me about $40— but man was it dusty and made the adjoining room smell like a foundry.
I made leaded glass doors for the media rack. I put in an IR repeater system so that I can point my remote control at the screen and control everything in the rack.
